Xarelto is an anticoagulant (blood thinner) that has been widely prescribed to prevent blood clots in patients suffering from atrial fibrillation (arrhythmia of the heart); deep vein thrombosis (blood clots deep within the body); pulmonary embolism (blood clots in the lungs); stroke; and patients who have recently undergone a knee or hip replacement surgery. It generally is prescribed as an alternative to Warfarin (Coumadin), a blood thinner that began to be used in 1954. Approved in 2011, Xarelto (rivaroxaban) is one of the newest blood thinners on the market and is manufactured by Bayer and marketed by Johnson & Johnson’s subsidiary, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, in the United States.

The most dangerous side effect for people taking Xarelto is uncontrollable bleeding – a risk shared by all blood thinners. Some top heart doctors are concerned about Xarelto’s safety.

Recent studies suggest that there is a relationship between pregnant mothers who took Zofran and certain birth defects. Zofran is a 5-HT3 receptor antagonist also known by its generic form, ondansetron, which is used to treat patients with nausea and vomiting. Approved in 1991, Zofran has become one of the more popular anti-nausea medications on the market; it is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline and marketed across the United States. Zofran’s original intended purpose was to treat nausea and vomiting in cancer patients, but it has also been widely prescribed for “off-label” use to treat morning sickness in pregnant women, and patients recovering from surgery.

The most dangerous side effects associated with patients who took Zofran are severe birth defects in their children. Specifically: heart malformations; kidney malformations; cleft palates; and death in infants. Recent studies indicate serious concerns about Zofran’s safety.
